Which barcode format should I use?
QR codes are the most versatile — they encode URLs, text, contact info, and more, and are scannable by any smartphone camera. Code 128 is the standard for shipping labels, inventory, and internal tracking — it encodes any ASCII character at variable length. EAN-13 is the international retail standard (the barcode on most products sold outside North America). UPC-A is the North American retail standard — required by most major US retailers including Walmart and Target.
Do I need to register a barcode?
For QR codes and Code 128, no registration is needed. For EAN-13 and UPC-A barcodes for retail products, you need a GS1 company prefix, which uniquely identifies your company's products. GS1 memberships start at $250/year for a prefix that supports 10 products. Without a GS1 prefix, your barcode may be rejected by retailers. This generator is for internal use, prototyping, and QR/Code128 applications — for retail product barcodes sold in stores, obtain an official GS1 prefix.
