When do you need to provide a receipt?

In the US, there's no federal law requiring receipts for most transactions, but several states require them for purchases over $1. More practically: customers expect receipts for any transaction over $10, and receipts are your primary proof of payment in disputes. For tax purposes, keep copies of all receipts you issue — they document your business revenue. If you're in a cash-heavy business (food truck, markets, services), a simple receipt practice prevents disputes before they start.

Receipt vs. invoice — what's the difference?

An invoice is a request for payment (issued before payment). A receipt is proof of payment (issued after). Both should include the business name, customer name, date, itemized list, and total. Receipts additionally note that payment was received. For freelancers: issue an invoice, then when paid, mark it paid or issue a separate receipt — this creates a clear payment trail for both parties.
